MATE ROV Competition Forum Board Rulings

Post by Matthew Gardner » Tue Feb 25, 2020 10:47 am

Hi all:

This thread will summarize official rulings about the 2020 MATE ROV Competition.
Please do not ask questions in this thread. create your own topic to ask questions (even if it is a direct question about a ruling posted here).

1) The company built quadrat used to count mussels is not considered debris. Divers will return it (after mission time is up) at no penalty.

2) Autonomous vs manual for creation of the map & photomosaic:

For companies attempting to autonomously create the map of the coral reef, you are allowed to take a screenshot and send it to another device. A program should then autonomously create a map using that photo / video screenshot. The intent for autonomous mapping is to create a program that takes a photo / video screenshot image of the actual objects on a reef and autonomously creates a map showing which grid square those objects are in. For EXPLORER class, this would constitute autonomous mapping.

For companies attempting to autonomously create the photomosaic of the submerged subway car, you are allowed to take screenshots of the sides of the subway car and send them to another device. A program should then autonomously join the photos into a photomosaic matching the colored edges of each side of the subway car. The intent of autonomous creating of the photomosaic is to create a program that takes the photos / video screenshots of the subway car and autonomously creates the photomosaic and displays the photomosaic on a screen.

For the photomosaic task (EXPLORER), any manipulation of the images would be considered manual creating the photomosaic. Pilots may maneuver their vehicle to any location to take the photo, but cannot manipulate the image beyond that.

Companies may not crop photos taken, designate/outline portions of their viewscreen, etc. That would be considered manual creation of the photomosaic.

Companies may maneuver their vehicle/camera to anywhere to take their photo. Companies may then transfer that unaltered screenshot(s) to their computer/device. Those actions are still considered autonomous creation of the photomosaic.

Please note that during the live Competition Prop Q&A and in previous replies to the same question you stated that it's okay if we take a screenshot and define a region of interest in the image. It seems really unfair to change these rules right before the Regional Competitions as they are less than a month away!
