[EXPLORER] Rechargeable Batteries

Post by EER_Mark » Wed Apr 10, 2019 3:42 pm

Hello,

Our team knows that rechargeable batteries are not allowed in the competition, but as a general comment we really recommend that MATE allows such batteries for future competition tasks.

While testing our Micro-ROV, we blow through our battery pack in under 5 minutes, and we're assuming this will be the same for other teams. This works for a competition mission run, but its going to cost our team a lot of money in disposable batteries to extensively test our vehicle.

There's really no way around this issue either. No matter what, it takes a lot of energy to get that Micro-ROV to the back of the corvex pipe. The disposable nature of the allowed batteries (alkaline) is not a good choice economically or environmentally.

Thanks,
-Mark

Our lead safety inspectors expressed serious safety concerns about rechargeable batteries in water inside containers.

Hi Matt,

What's specific about rechargeable batteries that makes them more of a hazard? A couple of team members are super interested in topic, if you have a more detailed description from the safety inspectors that would be great!

Thanks,
Mark
