Electrical Tape for Cracks in Dam

Post by jensteakley » Mon Jan 07, 2019 11:58 am

The tape specified is "Scotch 3/4 in. x 66 ft. #35 Electrical Tape Blue" for the cracks in the dam. Does this mean we can depend on the width of the tape to be 3/4" or can a region substitute a similar tape with a different width?

Additional details:

In the build instructions it states:

"In no case should the dimensions given in this document for a product demonstration prop be used to calibrate a measuring device."

1) Does this mean we cannot use the width of the tape to help calculate the length of the crack?
2) Can we use the size of the U-bolt to calculate the size of the canon?

Thanks
Matthew

The first part would be a question for your regional coordinator. I hope all regionals will purchase the given tape, but some regionals may not be able to get it.

Using any product demonstration prop as calibration is risky and not recommended. If an issue occurs and a prop needs to be substituted out, you may find a different prop than expected on competition day.

The width of the tape was not given for RANGER class. The width of the tape was given for EXPLORER class. RANGER class companies should not count on the tape being 3/4-inch in width. EXPLORER companies at the international competition can count on the tape being 3/4-inch, between 1.8 and 1.9 mm in width. EXPLORER companies at regional competitions should consult their regional coordinator.

Good luck.

We were thinking of using the grid spacing on the dam to calibrate the size of things in order to estimate the length of the largest crack. Is that within the rules and are those grids likely to be precisely made within reason?

For RANGER class, the size of the grid rectangles is variable.

For EXPLORER class, the size of the grids is 30 cm x 30 cm.

For all classes, expect slight tolerances in all measurements. For example, the size of the EXPLORER grid squares may be 2 to 3 mm off of 30 cm. The thickness of the line may vary a mm or two as well.

Good luck.
